Incident: A call or calls to one specific location for ambulance assistance or transport (where at least one ambulance resource has been sent).

Response: An individual ambulance resource dispatched to an incident.

Transport: An ambulance response resulting in the transport of a patient

Emergency Activity: Emergency activity is defined as ‘000’ cases determined as ‘emergency’ (immediate response under lights and sirens) or ‘urgent’ (undelayed response without warning devices).

Non-Emergency Activity: Non-emergency activity is defined as ‘000’ cases not determined as ‘emergency’ or ‘urgent’ as well as calls not received via the 000 network, predominantly scheduled patient transfer services and out-patient appointments.

Of the 3,540 staff employed within Ambulance, 89.1 per cent are uniformed paramedics.
The remaining employees are predominantly corporate administration staff working in areas such as policy development, human resources, payroll, administrative support, automotive repairs and stores.

 Ambulance Vehicles

Our current fleet of vehicles includes:

  • 954 ambulances (stretcher carrying vehicles) - consisting of Mercedes, VW, Land Cruisers and Ford Transits (Ford Transits are used solely for the Patient Transport Service)
  • Approx 400 support vehicles (including rescue trucks, megalift, cars, 36 rapid response vehicles)
  • 3 BMW Motorbikes
  • 4 Beechcraft Super Kingair B200c aircraft (Contracted)
  • 9 helicopters (Contracted)
  • Specialist over snow vehicles – including a Kassborher oversnow vehicle, two Yamaha and two Bearcat snowmobiles a Toyota 4WD Landcruiser (Mattrac equipped) and a 4WD Quad Bike and trailer.

  • The Ambulance vehicle fleet is now on average eighteen months old making it one of the most modern and largest ambulance fleet in the world.

Location of ambulance stations

There are a total of 226 ambulance stations including honorary stations throughout the State, located within four separate divisions. Each Division is responsible for service delivery, administrative and business support functions, while the operation centres coordinate all resources in their particular geographical areas.

Sydney Division- the most densely populated division, encompassing Wahroonga to the north, the Blue Mountains to the west and The Royal National Park to the south.
Northern Division- extends from the Queensland border in the north, to the Hawkesbury River in the south, including the towns of Murrurundi and Merriwa to the west.
Southern Division-extends from Helensburgh to the Victorian border in the south, continuing west to the South Australian border, then north to the Queensland border including the city of Broken Hill.
Western Division- from Cober in the west and the Queensland border in the north, Oberon and Ivanhoe to the south and Lithgow to the east.

Located in Sydney, Dubbo, Charlestown (Newcastle) and Warilla (Wollongong)
