A national Triple Zero (000) awareness campaign was launched at the Sydney Opera House on 20 August 2007. The month-long national advertising campaign aims to build awareness of the Triple Zero (000) number and educate the community about when to use the number. Meningococcal disease is caused by a bacterial infection and can lead to serious illness. It is uncommon in NSW, and occurs more often in winter and spring. Infants, small children, adolescents and young adults are most at risk. Early treatment is vital. about_image2007 City to Surf (12 August)

Once again NSW Ambulance crews worked hand in hand with medical teams and St. John Ambulance in providing a comprehensive and high standard of medical care. Ambulance crews treated in excess of 70 patients on the day and effected some 35 transports ranging from heat exhaustion to sprained ankles. One patient suffered a cardiac arrest, but was reverted by his own implanted defibrillator and was transported to St. Vincents Hospital for ongoing care. (click here to read the full story)

Menindee Volunteer Ambulance Officer Georgina Staker recently hosted a Life… Live it, Save it project for some elderly residents in Menindee. The presentation is an excellent community project focused on the importance of recognising signs and symptoms in life threatening emergencies. All participants gained important information from the presentation on “when, how and why” to call an ambulance. (click here to read the full story)

about_imageAustralian Wilderness Navigation Shield 2007 (9 August)

Over 400 participants from approximately 100 teams took part in this year’s Australian Wilderness Navigation Shield, representing emergency service organisations from NSW, Victoria and the ACT. Ambulance was once again represented by teams from SCAT, Rescue and Shoalhaven Ambulance crews, with a number of ambulance officers also filling teams in other emergency service categories. about_imageAlbert and ambos reunite (9 August)

On Sunday 3 June 2007, Sussex Inlet Ambulance Officers enjoyed being re-united with Mr Albert Hassan and presented him with a Zoll watch. At mid-afternoon on Thursday 28 December 2006, the crew from Sussex Inlet responded to a local address where Albert had suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness. Ambulance Officers’ Lee Brown and Les Gernyi from Sussex Inlet and Paramedic Colin Apps from Huskisson administrated a shock from a Zoll machine and following CPR Albert was bought back to consciousness. From the North Shore Times - My wife was involved in a serious car accident at Wahroonga on Friday June 29, treated by ambulance officers and taken to Royal North Shore Hospital. I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to all the people involved in helping us in this difficult time, starting with the neighbours and passers-by, the ambulance crew, Kim and Jeff, the fire crew, Hornsby police and all the emergency team and volunteers from the hospital. Do you know the number to call in an emergency? Police, firefighters and ambulance officers say it is surprising how many people do not know the number to dial in an emergency is triple zero – 000. Ask for fire, police or ambulance once the call is answered and give the operator as much information as you can, for example, the house number, street name, a cross street. This will help the emergency services get to you as quickly as possible. (click here to read the full story)

about_imageNew rescue truck for Parramatta (11 July)

On Wednesday 11 July 2007, the Minister for Health, the Honorable Reba Meagher MP stopped off at Parramatta Ambulance Station and handed over the keys to the new Parramatta rescue truck. The Parramatta Rescue Unit has the highest workload of all rescue units within Ambulance, averaging 3,500 cases per year. (click here to read the full story)

A builder who suffered a heart attack on a worksite in Wagga would have died if it wasn’t for the sheer determination of his two workmates who refused to let him go. Ambulance officers are hailing Les Milton and Jeremy Hogg heroes, for performing CPR on their 60 year old co-worker and father of three Ron Ovington, who collapsed at a work site in Wagga Wagga.(click here to read the full story)

The Wagga Ambulance Rescue Unit instructor and other qualified rescue officers came on-board and organised joint training sessions in Batlow and Wagga Wagga for volunteers and on Saturday 30 June 2007 the Batlow VRA became operational again as a Primary Rescue Unit. More than 200,000 NSW residents will be invited to have their say on public health services as part of the inaugural NSW Health Annual Patient Survey. The state-wide patient survey is the first of its kind in NSW and will be followed up on an annual basis so those working in the health system can better understand and respond to the needs of patients. Students from Course 183B graduated as qualified ambulance officers during a ceremony at the Ambulance Education Centre at Rozelle on Friday 6 July 2007. At the same ceremony, students from Induction Course 202 received their Cap Badges. Students were presented to Her Excellency Maree Bashir AC, CVO Governor of New South Wales, Greg Rochford, Chief Executive and Mike Willis, General Manager, Operations and received their Diploma of Paramedical Science (Ambulance). The Audit Office of NSW has commended the Ambulance Service for improved response times and faster patient handover times to hospitals, despite a population explosion and an increase in demand for ambulance services since 2002. On Tuesday 26 June 2007, the NSW Minister for Health Reba Meagher announced Professor Debora Picone AM as the new Director-General of NSW Health. At the official launch of the Mobile Education Unit on Tuesday 19 June 2007, Chief Executive Greg Rochford thanked the Volkswagen Group Australia for the generous loan of a VW Caddy to use as mobile education unit for children. The vehicle will be used to deliver important community safety messages to children through requests for ambulance visits and will also be used in conjunction with the Be an Ambulance Hero; Dial Zero Zero Zero school education program. Heavy rains and high winds across New South Wales prior to and over the June long weekend placed significant demands on Ambulance. Central Coast and Hunter Sector ambulance officers provided 949 responses on Friday, an increase of more than 300 on average expected workload and Air Ambulance Emergency Helicopters responded to 51 incidents. A new emergency rescue helicopter service has brought larger and more powerful helicopters to patient rescue missions since it began on 14 May 2007. The new system service includes a larger treatment area greatly improving the ability for doctors and paramedics to treat patients en route, a better flying range allowing helicopters to travel greater distances and the ability to carry additional patients and extra medical equipment.
